Beschreibung

Cloud computing is an emerging IT service paradigm that enables users to gain on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources, such as servers, storage, and applications. Application of cloud computing by using cloud computing services is considered an innovative means of effectively meeting the changing and increasing IT needs, which are currently disturbing modern healthcare organizations. However, the adoption of cloud computing services by healthcare organizations is proceeding slowly. The research project “Cloud Computing Services for Healthcare Organizations” addresses aforementioned lagging situation of cloud adoption in healthcare organizations, such as hospitals, clinics, and nursing houses. By focusing on explaining phenomena of cloud computing services for healthcare organizations, the research project aims at deeper understanding of this innovation (i.e., the use of cloud computing services for healthcare). In existing research papers within the research project, we have employed well-established information systems (IS) theories and developed an evaluation framework for cloud computing services regarding their capabilities to enable collaboration within and/or among hospitals and an analytical theory for analyzing characteristics of cloud computing services for hospitals in a holistic way. For both existing research papers, we have closely collaborated with scholars and practitioners from 18 organizations or institutes located in three different regions (i.e., China, Belgium, and Germany). In future research, we strive to enhance collaboration with more partners who are also interested in this research project. We expect that this research project will contribute to both practice and theory. From a practical perspective, we assist hospitals in gaining deeper insights into cloud computing services for hospitals, strengthen their knowledge about cloud computing services, and thus facilitate cloud adoption processes in hospitals. From a theoretical perspective, we focus on employing or extending IS theories to explain IT phenomena in healthcare in a systematic manner. By doing so, our research contributes to IS theory development in the domain of health IT and can thereby be of high value for the IS community.
