He holds a Diplom in Media Studies/ Media Sociology from the University of Cologne. His research focuses on how the social dynamics in large-scale collaborative online platforms shape the performance of these systems. This includes research work on socio-technical interactions in Tagging Systems, Crowd-Sourcing solutions as well as his main research topic, studying how certain systematic behavioral mechanisms in Wikipedia can influence content production and how they can be detected and made more transparent.
His continued work in this area has taken place in the EU-Project RENDER, where he analyzes the editor behavior in Wikipedia to find patterns that have effects on article quality and bias.
