Minimum Emission Regions

Project Status: completed

Description

The precept of the research project MEREGIO (Minimum Emission Regions) is to meet the claim for more efficient decentralized energy systems by integrating advanced information and communication technology (ICT) into all stages of the energy supply chain. Centerpiece of this project is a marketplace which is coupled to the technical energy infrastructure by a powerful and lawful ICT infrastructure and which enables an efficient and transparent coordination of energy supply, energy demand and services. The developed techno-economic concepts will be tested within a pilot project in the Karlsruhe/Stuttgart area. Additionally, further research participants will be connected to the model area by means of a grid simulation. Hereby, it is possible to evaluate the impacts of enhanced use of ICT on varying area structures and states of the power grid. In order to assess the effectiveness of the package of measures, a "Minimum Emission" certification for regions will be developed and applied to the model region. This is intended as a tool to communicate - with a high level of visibility to the outside world - the effectiveness of regional concepts for improved energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. MEREGIO is funded by the E-Energy program. "E-Energy: ICT-based Energy System of the Future" is a new support and funding priority undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) as part of the technology policy of the Federal Government.
