Blockchains are systems with a high degree of decentralization and consist of three main components: transactions, a consensus protocol, and a communication network. Blockchain became popular as the underlying technology of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Facilitation of financial transactions is however only one use case for blockchains. Other use cases include improvements in supply chain management or ensuring the integrity of public records. Research on Blockchain is still in its infancy. Due to the current popularity of blockchains, developers are rebuilding diverse information systems on blockchains and are also inventing new types of information systems. Only the future will tell for what use cases blockchains are truly superior to traditional infrastructures. We are especially interested in theses aiming to leverage Blockchain for patient empowerment in health care information systems by employing a conceptual, empirical, or implementation-focused approach.

Background:

Objective(s):

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

- Opportunities and challenges for leveraging Blockchain in health care

- Patient data management on blockchains

- Safe, patient-centered health information exchange based on blockchains

- Blockchain-based reputation and recommender systems in health care

This is an umbrella topic since topics of interest change rapidly. A specific topic will be selected during a first meeting.
