What can BPM researchers learn from the other sciences?

Veranstaltungsart:
Kolloquium Angewandte Informatik

Abstract Business Process Management (BPM) is a field of scientific investigation that is concerned with the methods, techniques, and software to design, enact, control, and analyze operational processes. As a discipline, it blends paradigms and methodologies from organization management theory, computer science, mathematics, and the cognitive sciences. It is this versatility and interdisciplinary setting that also characterizes BPM as a true "theory in practice" subject. While considerable progress has been made in the past years and a growing number of researchers have become involved in the field, it can be argued that BPM is still in its infancy. In this talk, I will provide a number of perspectives from different scientific fields to illustrate the limits of current BPM research on the one hand and to identify a number of prospects for further maturing on the other hand.

Biography Hajo Reijers is a full professor in Information Systems at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), as well as the head of Business Process Management (BPM) research at Perceptive Software. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science (2002), an M.Sc. in Computer Science (1994), and an M.Sc. in Technology and Society (1994), all from TU/e. Hajo wrote his Ph.D. thesis on the topic of BPM for the service industry while he was a manager with Deloitte. As a consultant, he has been involved in various reengineering projects and workflow system implementations, particularly for governmental agencies and organizations offering financial services. By now, he published over 150 scientific papers, chapters in edited books, and articles in professional journals.
