Background:

By 2025 every new car sold will be connected to the Internet. Furthermore, by 2030 every new vehicle will be able to drive autonomously on the highway, and finally, by 2040, the first fully automated vehicles (Level 5) are offered in the market. Consequently, automotive technology must be further developed, becoming more digitalized and connected. However, highly connected and autonomous vehicles will only meet with a broad consumer acceptance if the safety of people and the digitalized road infrastructure are guaranteed. Thereby, the connected and autonomous vehicles require not only a mechanical attestation to ensure driving safety but must also provide IT security and data protection. Therefore, vehicle-to-everything communication (V2X), for example, the communication from vehicle to vehicle (V2V) or from vehicle to infrastructure (V2I), must be ensured and trusted. Additionally, the higher demands on computing power and intelligence make the functionality of vehicles, in general, more difficult for the population to understand. In order to counteract these problems and, in particular, to reduce information asymmetries, certificates are used as a tool both in research and in practice. Like in the ISO/IEC27001 for information security management systems, certifications have shown that they can reduce information asymmetries between parties and increase the trust and acceptance in innovate and new technologies (e.g., Cloud Certification).


Objective(s):

Through the upcoming appearance of connected and automotive vehicles, the challenge of creating broad acceptance and trust in these technologies are becoming more and more critical. Therefore, the goal of the thesis is to get an overview of possibilities to build trust and acceptance in these technologies.
