|Abstract=Developing ontologies is a core activity of the On-To-Knowledge project. The methodology developed within the project guides the case studies for exploiting different ways for construction and usage of ontologies. However, because of the size of ontologies, their complexity, their formal underpinnings and the necessity to come towards a shared understanding within a group of people, ontologies are still far from being a commodity. In recent years, research aimed at paving the way for the construction of ontologies by ontology development environments. Thereby, we have seen different directions taken to support the engineering of ontologies. However, only few of these seminal approaches have worked towards combining all of these urgent desiderata. This observation seems to reflect our own project experience, viz. that it is far from trivial to offer a sound integration of these aspects. Therefore, OntoEdit is an ontology engineering environment that is rather unique in its kind as it combines methodology-based ontology development with capabilities for collaboration  and a tight integration into a tool framework, i.e. the On-To-Knowledge framework.

Kurzfassung
Developing ontologies is a core activity of the On-To-Knowledge project.
