Background:

Cascading failures are incidents in interconnected systems where the failure of one or a few parts can trigger the failure of other parts. In case of cascading failures, other parts must then compensate for the failed component. This in turn overloads these nodes, causing them to fail as well, prompting additional nodes to fail one after another. Such a failure may happen in many types of systems, including energy networks, computer networking, finance, human body systems, and bridges.Cascading failures are a threat in interconnected critical information infrastructures. Critical information infrastructures (CII) are sociotechnical systems comprising essential software components, networks and information systems with pivotal impact on individuals, organizations, governments, economies, and society. These CII are operated in different domains like energy (electricity, oil, or gas management systems), transport (air, rail, or water transport), banking, health care, and digital infrastructures (internet exchange points or DNS service providers). Innovative approaches are required to monitor reliability and security of interconnected CII, and to exchange monitoring information among CII actors to facilitate proactive prevention and reactive correction of cascading failures.


Objective(s):

This thesis aims to create a better understanding of the nature of cascading failures in the context of interconnected critical infrastructures and how to prevent them.Students are required to define cascading failures and identify approaches how to prevent critical failures.
