Abstract:

Mobile payment applications enable users to pay with their smartphones in merchants and on digital platforms. They are increasingly well adopted by consumers. Besides many advantages, mobile payment apps create multifarious privacy risks for their users. The identification and qualitative assessment of these privacy risks is subject of this work. For this purpose, a taxonomy of 18 mobile payment apps and their related organizational privacy practices is systematically developed. Subsequently, identified privacy practices are linked to privacy violations that were formally defined in previous research. Findings state how privacy violations are enabled by applied privacy practices of mobile payment providers. Furthermore, an outlook, which practices providers should pay closer attention to in the future, to avoid user privacy violations is provided, as well as which factors users should consider when evaluating which mobile payment application fits their privacy preferences best.
